The Middle is a film installation, directed by Desmond Maycare.
The Middle, focusses on the disconnect between our physical bodies and our minds, related to the perception of society. This brings me to Maurice Merleau-Ponty. A part of his philosophy consisted of the idea that the human body is not just a physical object, but also a fundamental part of how we experience the world.
As a man who later in life came to identify as Crip, I can experience a deep sense of disconnect. A certain feeling of not belonging, through non-conformity. The Middle relates to this experience as a starting point, but is focused on different angles to the disconnection between our physical bodies and our minds. The Middle also explores masculinity and how vulnerability is perceived within it.
Individualism and a certain disconnect are very present in society. This reality can be experienced as absurd, like a surreal dream. The Middle represents an alternative dimension, a surreal environment that questions our reality.
